成語「公說公有理，婆說婆有理」的意思是指對於同一件事情，雙方僵持不下，堅持認為自己的看法及理論是對的，而在英文中，有句諺語叫作「There are two sides to every question」，其字面上的意思是指一個錢幣有兩面，引申的意思即為同樣一件事情，無可避免地必定有兩個不同的觀點、正反面向，意思與成語「公說公有理，婆說婆有理」相近，而在本單元中，可用來形容台灣在死刑存廢這個議題上，不同團體以不同的觀點來看待其存廢的現象。

In Taiwan, there have been multiple heated discussions on whether death penalty should be abolished or not.

There are social groups urging for the abolition of death penalty, while on the other hand, there are those who strongly oppose the idea of abolishing this penalty.

For the social groups, they urge the abolition from more of a humanitarian standpoint. On the contrary, the opposing side fears the abolition would somehow become some sort of encouragement for committing serious crimes without corresponding consequences holding those offenders accountable.

Which side do you agree with on the abolition of death penalty in Taiwan? Please explain.

題目說道，台灣社會目前對於廢除死刑這個議題，有著不同的想法，有些社運團體抱持著支持廢除死刑的觀點，但也有許多人反對廢除死刑，認為死刑若廢除的話，將會無形中鼓舞社會中犯罪情事的增長，因為司法將失去有效仲裁的方式；以下範文在第一段中先提到「公說公有理，婆說婆有理There are two side to every question」，來概述台灣社會目前對於廢除死刑這個議題上所持有的不同看法。

應試撇步

本範文一開頭便先點出台灣社會目前對於廢除死刑，存在著正反兩面的看法，並在第二段提到這幾年接二連三發生的「隨機殺人事件random killing」，而司法無法在第一個重大隨機殺人案發生後的第一時間執行有效制裁，引發了「模仿效應the Imitation Effect」，而從某個角度來看，之後所發生的案件，可說是第一起案件的「副產物byproduct」。

In Taiwan, there have been contentious debates on whether death penalty should be abolished or not. As with anything, there are always two sides to every question. Both the supporting side and the opposing side on the continued existence of death penalty make strong arguments to defend their stance. From my personal point of view, I concur with the reasoning of the opposing side as I find their arguments more compelling and logical, and will explain further in the next paragraph.

台灣最近有許多激烈的辯論，討論死刑是否應該廢除，而正如許多事情一樣，總是公說公有理，婆說婆有理，而正反兩方對於死刑的存廢都有各自的論點，至於我個人的觀點來看，我較同意反方所持的論點，因為我認為反方的論點較強烈、符合邏輯，而在下一段會更加詳細說明。

To begin with, there have been a couple of incidents where manslaughter is carried out in the broad daylight in Taiwan. The fact that the criminals responsible are not executed immediately after arrest is not only adding insult to injury, but also creating the Imitation Effect. Since the first incident of random killing took place, the following episodes of similar offences are considered a byproduct of the first incidence. In fact, many people actually blame the Imitation Effect a result of the legal system’s lack of warranted punishment on the first offender in a timely manner. Therefore, it is important to point out that since the pure delay of proper execution on offenders could have ramifications on the whole society, the abolition of death penalty is for sure to have a bigger impact.

首先，台灣最近有一連串於公開場合殺人的事件，而當這些罪犯並沒有於逮捕後的第一時間處以相關責任刑罰時，不只使事情雪上加霜，也產生了模仿效應，因為從第一起隨機殺人事件發生後，隨後發生的類似案件可被視為第一起案件的副產物，而事實上，許多人譴責司法系統所缺乏的即時處罰、判決機制，造就了這波模仿效應，因此，我們必須瞭解到，若單純司法處罰、判決的延遲，就能夠對於整個社會產生許多影響，那死刑的廢除更是不用說了。

In summary, the abolition of death penalty, thought might be viewed humanitarian in the eye of some social groups, would ultimately alter the dynamics of social justice system. To avoid that, I oppose to abolish such punishment for major crime offences.

總結來說，儘管有些社運團體認為廢除死刑是人道的，但終將會對社會正義系統造成影響，而若要避免此影響，我反對廢除死刑。
